UltraMist HVLP Spray Tanning Gun Maintenance

UltraMyst HVLP Spray Gun Maintenance

Routine Cleaning

Needed: It is best to clean the gun with the unit close to a sink. If a sink is not convenient, a jar, small plastic pail, or even a discarded 2 liter pop bottle or milk jug may suffice as a catch container. For the back bubbling method, a small plastic pail would be best.

1. For quick overall cleanup of the gun, you may want to remove it and rinse under a sink faucet. Reattach the gun for step 2.

2. Put water in the solution cup and spray through the gun until the spray is clear. Spray into the catch container you have selected.

3. You find this to be a tricky technique with the risk of sticking yiour finger on the needle as well. It is a very effective technique, but is optional if it proves too difficult. To perform this step, you may want a larger catch container, such as a plastic pail, if you do not have a sink. Put about 1 Oz of water in the spray gun cup. You will be performing a procedure called “back bubbling” that will free built up residue inside the spray gun.

Basically, you will pull back the trigger of the gun until the needle retracts inside the spray gun, then place a finger over the end of the spray gun to block the flow of air and water. This will cause air to be forced back into the solution cup, producing bubbles with a “boiling” appearance. To prevent pricking your finger on the end of the needle, you may try wadding some protective material to form a cushion cushion.

Perform the bubbling for a few seconds. Replace the water and repeat if significant residue is freed. There is a possibility that the bubbling action will cause the cup to overflow. So, it is best to perform this procedure over a catch container.

4. For a more thorough cleaning, flush with airbrush cleaner as in step 2.

Disassembly & Thorough Cleaning

On occasion, you may notice that the routine cleaning previously described does not restore optimal performance to your spray gun. If so, the following steps are called for.

Needed:
You will need the brush, spanner wrench and optional filter from the box your spray gun came in. These items will be found in a small box contained in the front of that box.

1. Remove the cup from the spray gun by rotating counterclockwise. You should be able to do this by hand, but if it is too tight, use the “17” fitting on the spanner wrench to turn the nut at the base of the plastic cup. Rotate counter-clockwise when viewing from above the cup.

2. If the optional filter is installed already, remove it. An easy way to remove the filter is to insert the cleaning brush into the filter slightly and retract. The bristles of the brush will grasp the filter. Flush water through the filter until clean. We recommend use of the optional filter to ease cleaning since it will trap sediments and thick particles.

3. Remove the air cap (referred to as needle cap on the parts list) from the front of the spray gun by rotating counterclockwise.

4. Remove the needle adjusting screw from the back of the spray gun by rotating counterclockwise until the screw is popped out by the needle spring.

5. Remove the needle spring.

6. Remove the needle by pulling from the spray gun.

7. Using the spanner wrench, place the hexagonal wrench fitting in the center of the wrench marked “8” over the fluid nozzle on the front of the gun. Rotate counterclockwise to remove the fluid nozzle.

8. After removing the fluid nozzle you will see a small plastic o-ring with 4 holes inside the gun. Typically, you will not need to remove this for cleaning. But if you do, or if it accidentally comes out, you will note that it has a small grove or channel in the back of the o-ring. It is very important that the groove side of the o-ring goes in first.

9. Using the supplied brush and some water or airbrush cleaner, scrub out the channel where the cup attaches and scrub out the channel where the nozzle attaches. Use a twisting motion.

Re-Assembly

1. First, make sure that the o-ring is properly inserted in the spray gun with the groove side in first. Screw the nozzle onto the spray gun by hand using a clockwise rotation. Being careful not to apply excessive force, use the spanner wrench and the number “8” fitting to tighten the nozzle slightly.

2. Before reinserting the needle, note that there is a hole in the second pin on the spray gun trigger. As you reinsert the needle, you will need to make sure this hole is in proper alignment. You can use your hand to grasp each end of the pin and rotate to achieve proper alignment. The needle will be inserted properly when the tip is barely visible protruding through the nozzle cap.

3. Reattach the needle cap to the front of the gun by rotating clockwise.

4. Replace the spring over the needle.

5. Grasping the gun firmly, position the needle adjusting screw over the spring and press firmly until the screw contacts the spray gun body and rotate clockwise to reattach the screw to the spray gun. This may require a bit of force, since the spring is strong. Continue screwing the needle adjusting screw until it will advance no further. Then back off about 3 revolutions. This should be close to your normal spray setting.

6. If you are using the optional filter, insert the filter with the “stem” end going in first.

7. Reattach the solution cup by rotating clockwise.

Your spray gun is now reassembled and ready for use.
